mdb got it right, I am looking for a uniform look of the material. I am NOT painting this, so the underlying material matters. I will be doing plasti dip with rub n buff, so I can get a real metal look. Think I will go with mdb's suggestion and fit some either plastic pieces, or ribbing in to make the shape more consistent.

That is sounding like the easiest and cheapest way to to fix this. Like layers of foam. I know it can warp but after the paint and modpodge, it is very stiff. I should've probably just done ribbing but I'm just tossing the solution I did out there. Sizing became a major issue however, due to the fact that the armor was closely fitted to me.

But the end result was very stiff and plastic-like. Again, not the best solution, but it's pretty ridged without being brittle. charades Well-Known Member. The same process as if you were fibreglassing mat onto an armor piece. ApophisV Active Member.

I'd use Kobracast to strenghten it from the inside: Similar to Worbla you heat it, then it gets flexible and sticky and you can apply it to the isndie of your foam. Since it has a cloth structure inside it is pretty forgiving while applying as long as the looks don't matter and applied in layers it's quickly getting pretty rigid usually two layers are enough to give support.

Craft foam is too soft. Thread starter kenoten Start date May 19, kenoten New Member. I am making a suit of armor, and for part of it I used some craft foam, but the foam is proving to be a bit too soft and bends and wrinkles, ruining the illusion of a suit of metal armor. How can I reinforce the foam to make it more rigid?

The silver boot is the old one made out of mostly paper and thin sheets of plastic. I am remaking it out of eva foam. The purple is the craft foam and needs to be harder.

jrenemtz Sr Member. you might consider coating it with plasti-dip. I will be coating everything eva included with plasti dip. I wasnt sure if that would be enough. I have only done plasti dip on scraps so far as testing.

On the note of plastidip, I seem to only need 3 coats to really coat my eva foam but it seems I need about 8 coats to coat the craft foam. Is that usual? It is like craft foam just drinks the stuff. aetherdeus Active Member.

Yeah, it happens. Try a coat or 3 of PVA glue or Mod Podge first - it gives a nice cheap base sealing and you should need fewer plastidip coats afterward. The plastidip is pretty decent, though I've found that large, flat pieces in mm are still pretty flimsy.

Anything thicker or reinforced with anything should be fine. mrclaybo Member. try styrospray. I use it for iron man armor. very light weight and you don't have to seal the foam. Ooh, I may have to try that out. I was looking at Smooth-On's Epsilon - thats a one-coat-all-in-one-epoxy but I'm too cheap.
