It often starts with planning your meals and creating a shopping list.

I live in southern Illinois and our grocery prices are very similar to those that Jill has listed here. BUT, I have a freezer full of venison and pork because my family hunts and because we raise our own pigs. Besides my full time job, I also work part time at a creamery and have access to cheese and grass fed beef at a great price.

I love to cook and make many things from scratch that some may buy in a package, box, etc. There are no rights or wrongs, just what works for you and your family.

Like Jill mentioned time and time again, this is what works for HER family and is just an example to show that it can be done.

Each person has to use what is available and make it work for their family. Where there is a will, there is a way! Yes Tracy exactly. I so appreciate you mentioning the things like the hunting, pigs, chickens etc. So thank you so much for this post. That is why I hate giving numbers because there are so many variables to it but I am afraid that is what people want for some reason.

They also get hung up on the numbers instead of listening to the tips we give of how to do the best you can for your family and in your situation. Thanks again. I bought the cookbook for my granddaughter and liked it so much that I bought one for myself as well.

We live an hour away from any big stores like Walmart so we only go shopping once a month usually. We keep a running grocery list on our phones that is shared and it updates each phone.

We go to a restaurant supply store to buy our meat, frozen vegetables and fruit for the month. The packaging is larger so we slice and repackage the meat for our dinners and freeze them.

Our little store has specials every week and I stock up on anything that we use on a regular basis as we like to shop local too. I buy by the case when things are on sale. This has saved us so much on groceries over the years. I have used coupons now and then.

I make my list and then look for any coupons for what is on my list. I save a ton of money on pet food and personal hygiene products this way. Love Living On A Dime. You guys think like I do.

I was a single Mom for over ten years to four boys and had to learn how to stretch everything. I think I was more creative then because I had to be.

I would like to see more of these plans with different menus. I refer to this one a lot. I really like somebody that illustrates exactly what to buy, and its cost. I love when the store runs its. My sons and husband eat fruits per day.

Also not enough eggs for a month and not enough lunch meat and cheese. I have to read your meal plans but 2 cans of sauce and 4 cans of beans is not nearly enough to last the whole month. Do you not drink milk? I stick to soy milk myself.

So we can see how much the actual food costs. And thanks for not pretending that people never snack.

Or that soup counts as dinner. One thing I usually try to mention is of course these prices always differ where you live and families are different. For example it is for a family of 4 but if you have a baby and toddler in the family the amount of food will be totally different than if you have 2 teen boys and a husband that does hard physical labor, or 2 four year old girls and your husband works in an office all day.

Yes, of course! It annoys me so much when I look for a Frugal meal plans and the authors suggest that Soup or Salad is somehow a complete meal and that my family would actually forgive me if I suggested as much or that people never have snacks or desserts- Of course they do- Omitting those things from the meal plan is not an effective way to save money!

so I really appreciate your thoroughness Thank you so much! Oh thank you Erika. We try to have different things for different people. I hate it when people cookie cutter people because each family has so many different things that make up their lives — how many in family, ages, types of work, where they live and on and on.

So thrilled that most of these prices are the same or very close in ! And with the exception of peanut butter very bad, epipen required, allergy my family should eat everything on the menu : My next grocery run will be from this list.

Most of the prices on there I can still get for close to the price listed. Now of course as we always say these are average prices — where you live it could be more or less. Love your list! This list will help me review my own grocery list.

I was very surprised I received it so quickly. It was very well packaged. Thank you! Put it by my chair, so I can review it when I sit down in the evening.

Looks like another good one just flipping through it. You folks are great! Keep up the good work that you do! Just found this post through Google.

We are a family of 7 with 5 kids including 2 teen boys and a fast growing middle schooler. I even added some extras such as Uncrustables for the freezer for emergencies, fresh berries, and store brand fruit snacks.

Way to go Ren. For a family your size you did great! Thanks for telling us about it and I am sure it will be an encouragement to many others.

I just calculated expenses if I do this as a vegetarian using vegetables instead of meat. Including paper products, of course. However it does kind of overwhelm me to try to make variations on what you have listed. How does one do that? Anyway, I will try. The main point is to use your leftovers and not throw away any food and watch your serving sizes.

Did you ladies update this recently? Not sure if this has been updated or not. I do know that is close to what Tawra spends now.

The main thing we try to teach it not to worry about the numbers but to learn to follow the tips we give because no matter what the prices do the tips will always help you keep your spending under control and using your money the best way you can.

Great tips! I just want you guys to know how much I enjoy watching. You have saved me so much money and my hope to save and pay off debt turned into a reality with the Dining on a dime cookbooks Volume I and II. Thank you so much for what you do.

I am forever grateful to you both for all of the small tips that turned into big savings. While so much of it is common sense, I needed guidance and you both have done that for me. You both are lifesavers and thanks to Mike for his talent and winning smile. Just watching the three of you makes me happy.

Love you guys! Blessings and thank you again! Oh Amy how sweet and thank you so much for taking the time to write us those encouraging words. I know I sound like a parrot when I keep saying we have the best viewers and we love your success stories so much.

We give the tips but you guys are the ones who do all the work and I always feel like a proud mama when I get a comment like yours. Sounds like you are doing such a great job with your debt. Keep up the good work and if you ever have any questions be sure to holler.

This chain has a cult following amongst citizens of the Lone Star State, and it's no wonder why. In addition to providing its customers with a wide array of top-notch products, the store also boasts relatively low prices compared to many other chains.

When it comes to produce, H-E-B can offer much lower costs than many stores because it prioritizes working with local producers. Since it's generally not shipping in produce from around the world, its transportation costs are significantly lower than those of many other grocery stores.

This in turn lowers the cost of fruits and vegetables for customers, who keep coming back because of the solid prices. This high rate of turnover makes the company money while helping its customers cut their grocery costs.

The only downside is the fact that you won't find H-E-B in the other 49 states, though there are over 60 locations in Mexico. However, if you're in Texas and you haven't yet checked out the popular chain, you need to shop there ASAP — it may just change your budget grocery game for the long haul.

You're not going to find Food4Less everywhere — the company, which is owned by grocery magnate Kroger, only operates in three states Indiana, Illinois, and California. But if you do happen to live near one of the chain's locations, you can benefit from the lower-than-average prices you'll find there.

You'll want to take a look at the store's weekly ads because that's where you'll often find the very best deals. Like a lot of discount stores, you'll have to bag your own groceries, but we think it's worth it for the lower cost. A lot of the time, these cheaper stores don't offer pharmacies or household items like cleaning products, but you'll find these amenities and more at Food4Less, which makes it a great option for people who want to get all of their shopping done at one spot.

Is Food4Less the most luxurious place you've ever shopped for groceries? But it will get you out the door with a few bags of groceries for considerably less than you would pay at most grocery stores.

Grocery Outlet is one of those stores that you have to shop at at least once if you love finding fantastic deals on groceries. There, you'll find consistently low prices to help you cut your grocery budget for good.

As the name suggests, this chain is an outlet. Basically, when a producer makes too much of a product that it can't otherwise sell, it contacts Grocery Outlet, which then buys the product for a reduced price. That's how the store passes those savings on to you — it pays less for its products so you can too.

Unlike some budget grocery chains, you'll find different products at every Grocery Outlet you go to, depending on what that particular store has access to. Concerned you won't be able to find what you need at Grocery Outlet?

Don't worry — the store also stocks fresh produce and most other supermarket staples so you'll always be able to find the essentials like eggs and milk. You're not going to find many grocery stores that offer prices lower than 99 Cents Only Stores. When the company was started, everything was offered for only 99 cents.

Of course, times have changed, and now, the name of the store is a slight misnomer — sometimes, you'll pay more than 99 cents for a product there and sometimes, you'll also pay less. Still, you can almost guarantee that you are going to get a great deal when you shop at these stores, which are currently only found in four states.

You can shop for produce here as well as a variety of other grocery products, although it can sometimes be difficult to find exactly what you're looking for. On the bright side, it's kind of a treasure-hunting experience — you'll never know what you'll find for cheap when you set foot inside one of these stores.

If you're the kind of person who's always on the hunt for a good deal, 99 Cents Only Stores undoubtedly make for an exciting shopping experience. When you're pinching your pennies, going to a traditional grocery store may not be the most cost-effective way to buy groceries.

Instead, heading to a dollar store like Family Dollar may just be the way to go. The popular chain offers some of the best food prices around, and it's often accessible in places where traditional grocery stores are not. Recently, the chain decided to lower its prices even further to compete with other dollar stores like General Dollar.

Company executives hope that this will attract more budget-minded shoppers to its stores. How are the prices at Family Dollar so low? Widespread reports of understaffing and cluttered stores indicate that the chain may not be spending as much on labor costs as it should, which probably isn't ideal on many fronts.

However, if you need to get groceries for cheap, it's an option that you may want to explore.
